November 24 (Renewables Now) – Chinese energy company China Three Gorges Corp on Thursday announced the production of the world’s largest capacity offshore wind turbine, a 16-MW nacelle that has left the assembly line of an industrial complex in the eastern Chinese province of Fujian.
The turbine is jointly developed by China Three Gorges and Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology (SHE:002202).
The unit, manufactured in the Fujian Three Gorges Offshore Wind Power Industrial Park, currently also has the largest rotor diameter of 252 metres (827 ft), and the lightest weight per MWh in the world, the company said.
According to China Three Gorges, the achievement shows that China’s wind power equipment industry has evolved from “following” to “running alongside” and then to “leading.”
The partners recently produced a 13.6-MW offshore wind turbine in Fujian province that was said to be the largest in the Asia-Pacific region.
Fellow Chinese manufacturer MingYang Smart Energy Group (SHA:601615) unveiled a 16-MW offshore wind turbine concept in 2021.
