SSE Renewables said today it has secured approval from the Scottish government to build an extension of up to 77 MW to its Achany wind farm in the Highlands.

The extension will consist of 18 turbines with tip height of up to 149.9 metres. It will be located on land adjacent to the existing wind farm, which is made up of 19 turbines and has a capacity of 38 MW.

The Scottish government in 2025 refused a previous application by SSE for a 26-turbine wind farm due to impacts on the National Scenic Area and ‘Wild Land.’

The company subsequently submitted an application for a redesigned proposal, located closer to the existing wind farms.

A final investment decision is expected in 2025.

“We will take some time to review the detail of the Scottish Government’s decision before work begins on the pre-construction activity necessary to allow us to proceed with the main construction of the project, subject to reaching a Final Investment Decision (FID) which is targeted for 2025,” said Claire Black, project manager for Achany Extension Wind Farm.
